iPad Bean Bag Stand Design Brief Extension Activity – Hand Sewn Decorative Feature

Think back to our scenario for our Design Brief… we are designing and producing an iPad Bean Bag Stand for our 11 year old sister. As you are well ahead of the rest of the class and you are pretty handy at sewing, why not challenge yourself. As an extension activity, hand sew a fabric flower as well as a button onto your iPad Bean Bag Stand as a decorative feature.

Hand sewn fabric flowers are very popular and appear on many craft sites and blogs.

Hand sewn fabric flowers are very popular at the moment.

Check out the two blogs that are listed on our ‘Blog Roll’ to the right of the screen for step by step instructions: ‘Pink Paper Peppermints’ and ‘A Pumpkin and a Princess’. You may use the scrap Poplin fabric in the blue bins and a matching button and thread.

If you feel that a flower decoration would not appeal, you are encouraged to create your own design for the decoration. Use the basic round and pointed petals from the two blogs above and a fabric ‘Yo Yo’. You may also wish to use a square petal in your design.

Carefully research and design your hand sewn decorative feature before you cut your fabric and start hand sewing.

Examples of the types of Decorative Features you may design to include on your iPad Bean Bag Stand.

Check out the ‘Better Homes and Gardens’ website listed in the ‘Blog Roll’ to the right of the screen for step by step instructions on how to make a fabric Yo Yo. Try the ‘Polka Dot Pineapple’ blog for the square petals. You may use the scrap Poplin fabric in  the blue bins and a small amount of the felt available in class for the smaller features of your design.
